Sport Relief comes to Hinckley & Bosworth

SPORT Relief is coming to the Borough later this month when people get the chance to join in the national fun and games by taking part in the Hinckley and Bosworth Mile.

The event is being staged at Hinckley United Football Club on Sunday 21st March and sets off at 11am. Those taking part can opt for one, three or six miles.

The run - and many more like it across the country - will provide the climax to Sport Relief Weekend, which is taking place from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st March.

Councillor Wendy Moore, The Executive Member responsible for Sport, said: “Having completed the last Sport Relief Mile I can recommend this fantastic event which provides fun, entertainment and exercise for people of all ages and abilities.

"It would be good to see a record turnout from people in the Hinckley and Bosworth area as the day provides an opportunity for families and friends to get together and also raise money for Sport Relief to help transform lives forever.”

Kerry Clarke, the council's Physical Activity Development Officer, added: “Our last Sport Relief event was very nearly cancelled due to rain, this also had a slight effect on the numbers of runners. We are determined not to let this happen this year and have space for nearly double the number. So come on Hinckley get signed up to your local mile and help us raise lots of money for Sport Relief.”

For those who want to take part, but feel they would benefit from some training beforehand, they could join a Learn to Jog group that meets at Hinckley's Clarendon Park every Saturday. The group is suitable for people of all ages and abilities and also includes fun fitness games. It costs £3 a session and places can be booked by calling Emma Hopkins on 07704 034093.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people across the country will rise to the challenge of the Sport Relief Mile, whether they do one, three or six miles. Comic Relief will spend the money raised through sponsorship helping poor and vulnerable people both in the UK and in the world’s poorest countries.

The whole thing kicks off on Friday 19th March when everyone gets active and raises cash at home, at work or at school before they settle down to watch a night of top Sport Relief on BBC One. Then there’ll be even more BBC radio, online and TV coverage throughout the weekend, culminating in the Sport Relief Mile on Sunday 21st March.
